ABOUT

lean in, because this is actually about you.

I STARTED A BETTER WORD TO HELP FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS COMMUNICATE WITH CLARITY, CARE, AND CONVICTION.

Maybe you lead a ministry or faith-based organization. Maybe you're in charge of communications (and—let’s be honest—probably a few other things, too), but your small-and-scrappy team is responsible for juggling what most companies have entire departments to handle.

There’s a chance you’re a team of one, flying solo and riding hard.

Either way, you're probably not just in charge of maintaining healthy communication within your organization; you’re also in charge of communicating with everyone outside of it.

If I had to guess, your organization is probably also looking to you to help with leadership messaging, some level of marketing support, and–of course–proofreading documents and copy for other teams.

You’ve got a lot on your plate, and it can feel harder to balance when you don’t have the headcount or budget to do things the way you’d really like to.

What if I told you I'd been there?

hi, it's me

sarah beth

Founder of A Better Word

After spending a few years in the agency world–several in public relations and a handful in corporate communications—I decided to take my combined professional experiences to start a communications department at a Christian nonprofit many moons ago. So believe me when I say I know what it’s like to step into the wild, wild west with no processes, systems, or teammates to share the load with.

That’s why I’m here for you now–ready to show you everything I’ve learned along the way (and wish I’d known when I started that job!). Consider me the replacement for the communications consultant your organization can’t afford–but with the actual, lived experience that lets me know how to equip you and help execute the work when you need another set of hands (and eyes, and thoughts).

My promise to you? I don’t just show people what communications should look like; I help them know how to get them done.

Communications can be complex, but they don’t have to be complicated. There’s a better way, and it starts with A Better Word.

LOVES: proper grammar, pour-overs, thoughtfully-curated bookshelves, well-written emails, & the one who is the giver of all these good things

CONFESSIONS

after all, if we're going to work together, you deserve to know the *real* me

I once mass distributed a pitch to a list of hundreds of reporters from an Excel spreadsheet that was one row off with the reporters’ first names…so every single person got an email addressed to someone else. You’ll be shocked to know I didn’t get a single bite on that pitch (sorry to my client that I can’t even recall now).

I was trained to be very anti-Oxford comma in high school and college and carried that with me into my career for years…until I didn’t. For those who relate to my early-20s self, I regret to inform you that I now believe the Oxford comma is helpful, clarifying, and all-around classy.

i love mondays. to me, they're a clean slate, a new start to the week—no matter how the one before it ended. the truth, though? god's mercies are new *every* morning.

I am anti-Kindle and refuse to read a book if I can’t hold it and smell the pages.

All about

The God of the universe Who loves me for reasons I can't understand, my husband, my children, getting lost in a good book, rich conversations, a clean kitchen at the end of every night, peanut butter, making a home that frequently brings others into it

NOT ABOUT

Surface-level conversations, emails with sentences that all end in periods, the return of the low-rise jean, pre-ground coffee, communications that react vs. respond, cold weather, and "vibes" (whatever those are or are supposed to do for people)

let's work together

get clear, be caring, keep your conviction

Words hold weight; that's why it's important to get them right. But when you're dealing with a small team and scrappy budget, bringing in partners to support your organization's communication efforts isn't always on the table. Add in the element of being faith-driven, and it's even harder to find help that will equally consider your business needs and biblical values.

With A Better Word, that partnership is possible.
